Baldur's Gate 3
Larian Studios didn't just make the best RPG in years — they fundamentally raised the bar for the entire genre and, arguably, for story-driven games as a whole.
Larian Studios didn't just make the best RPG in years — they fundamentally raised the bar for the entire genre and, arguably, for story-driven games as a whole.
For two decades, fans of Dungeons & Dragons dreamed of a truly faithful adaptation that captured the improvisational spirit of tabletop play. Baldur's Gate 3 delivers that dream. Every combat encounter can be won in a dozen different ways. Stealth, persuasion, environmental manipulation and creative spellcraft all stand as legitimate alternatives to direct combat. The fifth-edition ruleset is adapted with care — not slavishly, but with genuine understanding of why certain rules exist.
The cast — Astarion, Shadowheart, Karlach, Lae'zel, Wyll and Gale — rank among the finest companions in RPG history. Each has a multi-act personal arc with meaningful resolution. Their banter with one another is voiced and dynamic. The approval system creates genuine relationships that shift and deepen over 100+ hours of play. Larian's writing team built something that most games aspire to but few achieve: companions who feel like real people with their own lives and stakes.
The level of reactivity to player choices is unprecedented. Minor decisions in Act One have consequences in Act Three. Dead NPCs are remembered. Relationships altered. Locations permanently changed. The game contains hundreds of hours of content that most players will never see because their particular path through the story foreclosed alternatives. This is the definition of replayability done right.
Beyond the writing and design, Baldur's Gate 3 is a technical marvel. The cinematic dialogue system uses motion-captured performances for every conversation — a scope of production that explains why most RPGs use talking-head windows instead. The combat interface is the clearest CRPG UI ever made. Modding support on day one has produced a thriving creative community.
Baldur's Gate 3 is a generation-defining achievement. It will be studied by game designers for the next twenty years, and rightly so. For RPG fans, it is the new gold standard. For everyone else, it is reason enough to become an RPG fan. Buy it, play it, replay it.
