Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

FromSoftware's Magnum Opus Grows Mightier
9.8
OUTSTANDING
Action RPG

Shadow of the Erdtree is not merely a DLC — it is a full creative statement that stands among FromSoftware's finest work. At 25-40 hours of content, it is larger and more inventive than most full-priced releases.

The Land of Shadow

Miquella's realm is an inversion of the Lands Between — a place of golden beauty turned pale with sorrow and silence. The new map is enormous, vertically layered and densely packed with secrets. FromSoftware has mastered the art of environmental storytelling, and Shadow of the Erdtree represents their masterclass. Every ruined church, collapsed bridge and silent forest communicates narrative without a word of dialogue.

New Build Possibilities

The DLC introduces dozens of new weapons, spells and ashes of war that open entirely new build archetypes. The Light Greatsword faith build, the Backhand Blade dexterity setup, and the devastating Messmer spear incantation line are extraordinary. The new Martial Arts weapons provide a fist-fighting style previously absent from the game. Players who spent hundreds of hours in the base game will find genuine new ways to engage.

The Scadutree System

A new progression system — the Scadutree Fragments — governs how powerful you become in the DLC zone. It elegantly separates DLC difficulty from base game scaling, rewarding thorough exploration without gating content behind grind. The system is fair: thorough explorers find enough fragments to make the hardest bosses challenging rather than punishing.

Boss Highlights

Romina, Messmer the Impaler and the Divine Beast Dancing Lion rank among the greatest boss fights FromSoftware has ever designed. Messmer in particular — with his seven-phase escalation — is a spectacle of creative animation and mechanical depth. The final boss encounter is a masterwork of spectacle and mechanical ingenuity that will be studied by game designers for years.

Verdict

Shadow of the Erdtree is essential. It is bigger, more creative and more mechanically inventive than the majority of full-priced games released in the same year. For fans of FromSoftware's work, it is not optional — it is required. The bar for DLC has been permanently raised.
